The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
