Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions shaking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
