A recent study indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
