Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
